The Alkoomi Cellar is Alkoomi Wines' cellar door and tasting room in Albany, near the Old Gaol in WA's Great Southern. It offers visitors the chance to taste wines from the family's 105-hectare Frankland River estate — including Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and more — without making the journey deep into the remote wine country. Alkoomi was founded in 1971 by Merv and Judy Lange and is now run by their daughter Sandy Hallett; the vineyards are farmed with no herbicides or pesticides, using guinea fowl, sheep and compost in place of synthetic chemicals.
Alkoomi is not certified organic, but farms without herbicides or pesticides, using guinea fowl and sheep for pest management and compost made from grape marc and manure to feed the soil — a genuinely low-chemical approach to viticulture.
The Alkoomi Cellar tasting room is at 229 Stirling Terrace, Albany WA 6330, in the heart of the Great Southern. A second, winery-based tasting experience is also available at the Frankland River vineyard.
The range includes white wines (Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc), red wines (Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache and blends) and seasonal specials from the Grazing, Family and Icon collections.
Yes — Alkoomi offers on-site chalets at the Frankland River winery, accommodating up to 7 guests per chalet, making it a popular destination for a wine-country weekend.
