Castagna is one of Beechworth's most distinguished biodynamic estates, established in 1997 by Julian Castagna — a former film director — and farmed biodynamically from the very first vine. Situated at 500 m elevation on ancient granitic soil, the vineyard grows five clones of Syrah descended from original 1850s Rhone Valley stock, alongside Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Viognier and Chenin Blanc. All grapes are hand-pruned and hand-harvested at around two tons per acre, and wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Castagna is one of only four Australian producers invited into La Renaissance des Appellations, the international network of leading terroir-focused winemakers. Visits and tastings are by appointment.
Yes. Castagna has been farmed biodynamically since the vineyard was first planted in 1997 — making it one of Australia's longest-running biodynamic wine estates.
The estate specialises in Syrah (five clones from 1850s Rhone stock), Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Viognier and Chenin Blanc, all grown on granitic soils at around 500 m altitude.
Visits and tastings are by appointment only. Contact the winery via castagna.com.au or phone +61 3 5728 2888 to arrange a time.
Castagna is one of only four Australian members of La Renaissance des Appellations, a global association recognising winemakers who most faithfully express their terroir. The winery building itself is constructed using straw-bale methods.
